This weeks Photo has been sent in by Agnes Goering from Jessfield. Taken shortly before the
outbreak of the Second World War, her father, Charlie "Chick" Goering (2nd from the left)
can be seen talking to friends at what appears to be the Curling Pond at Kinneil woods.
Charlie was, for many years, a foreman at the Miller Pit.

Also pictured (ist left) is Agnes's uncle Tom "Tammy" Hussocks. A Rag-and-Bone Man to trade, Tammy, along with trusty cart-horse Samson, was a familiar site in the streets of Newtown, Jeered and verbally abused by children of all ages.
Do you know who the other two gentlemen might be ?

Sir,
With reference to last week's 'Peep at the Past' foaty suppled by Agnes Goering, whilst I do not recall any of the said gentlemen, I just wanted to write in a say that I do remember Samson the trusty cart-horse referenced in the caption. It was a handsome steed, and I remember it tirelessly brigin Hussocks cart up the Church Wynd on many an occasion, rightly receiving a good whipping in the process. I believe it also took part in many Fair Days, pulling Floats along, much to the delight of the weans and onlookers. I remember one year a float wheel stuck in a gundie coming past Ballantine's Foundry - it took several kicks and punches before Samson could get it going again. The horse was well loved in the 6 months it spent up on the surface after working doon the pit, before one day it bit auld Hussocks yince too aften, n wis sent ti make wallpaper glue the day efter.
Yours sincerely,
Jurnal Reader
Happy Days.
I think the man with the moustache was teacher of mine. I only remember his girlfriend's name - Evelyn Brown.
I posted a video of the guy with the nob-tickler some months back. He bid in the first cul-de sac on the right as you head north from the Learig. The mental one.
