Life's A Pitch

This photo is especially for Tricky, who has often told me of the fond memories he has of playing on the Grange's gravel pitch during the inter-school football tournaments of the 1950s.

Thanks Mowg. That's brought a tear to my eye. For several reasons.
I don't remember playing there at ten to eight at night though

That path in the foreground has still got bits i ma teeth and nose embedded in it eftir a miss-timed, winter slide disaster. Luckily the Janitor, Dan Bennie was on hand with his "magic sponge".
Granted, that sounds like a euphamism for something more sinister. In actual fact it wis merely an ordinary sponge soaked in Dettol. Perfect for an open face wound on a freezin cauld day!

Whilst no doobtin Bennie's 'magic' abilities, ah take humbrage wi his refereein qualifications. He wid aft times volunteer ti ref the St. Mary's v Grange skill matches wi an obvious bias tiwards his ain skill. Ah mind yin time he gave so miny oafside decisions in the Grange's favour - even tho' we wur beatn thum 5-0 it the time - thit I wis given a bollocking bi Mrs. Beer oor gym teacher (thit still rankles) fur innocently callin him "a cheatn baldy janitorial baisart".

When I was in the "Queens" class way back at the Grange, the Champion was picked by standing at the far end of the pitch while we all stood on the grassy bank and whoever was the loudest would be the the champion that year.
Oh the memories
